Hey john im kalia from Dakota Hills Middle School that talked to you about how I’m great about using a voice in a character and i just wanna thank you for your great edvise!!! And i really want to read your next book that u were talking about to us because i love reading about blacks and whites because im a mixture of both and i like to see what both sides of my race are like so you have inspired me…
Thanks again, Kalia
Kaila, I remember you very well! Thanks for taking the time to write me. It was a pleasure to come to your school and spend time your class.
I’ll certainly let you know when the book comes out. You’ll probably hear me screaming! Take care and good luck with your writing. Remember, it always looks bad before it looks good. The best writers are the best re-writers. And when you hear that dialog going in your head, remember to write it down in your journal. It’s great material for your future stories, books and plays!

I’ve eagerly awaited your new book! I placed an order on Amazon weeks ago and I can’t wait until it arrives!
We miss you at Judson.

Diane, I hope reading the book gives you much enjoyment. Thanks for letting me know you picked it up and please check back when you finish. I’d love to know your thoughts.
The Healing is a profound mix of history, spirit and mystery. I am stunned by the scope and beauty of this journey into one of the darkest periods in our history. I am also somewhat perplexed by the many comparisons to The Help. They share little in common but the physical locale these extremely distinct stories are placed in. The texture and poetry of The Healing is much more readily compared to Toni Morrison’s Beloved. What a brilliant achievement – thank you, Mr Odell !! [Posted to Amazon.com]
What a beautiful book! I agree with Rand that it cannot be compared to The Help. My young adopted grandaughters will one day long for their birth mother. So meaningful to me are Polly’s words to Granada, “What you been wanting to tell her, child? What you been holding on to for your momma? Let her hear it now.”
Thank you for this story that is touching my life at a moment that I need it.
Kay, this was a wonderful message to receive. To know so precisely how an author’s words effect a reader is the greatest gift. You sound like a wonderfully sensitive grandmom!
